 ♦ All informational items were gleaned from a variety of sources and the City maintains no responsibilty for factual accuracies.♦ ♦ Did you know that 11-3-09 (election day) marks Wixom’s 22nd anniversary of the Council/Manager form of government?♦ ♦ Did you know that the weight tax on trucks in Michigan goes to fund libraries, not roads?♦ ♦ Did you know that the 6% sales tax collected on gasoline goes to the state education fund?♦ ♦ Currently, the average Michigan driver pays 2 ½ cents per mile traveled into the states road fund ♦ ♦ The charter of the Village of Wixom was adopted by the Charter Commission of the Village at its regular meeting held on April 11, 1957. ♦ ♦ The original charter of the City of Wixom was adopted by the Charter Commission of the City of Wixom at a regular meeting held on February 25, 1958. ♦ ♦ Michael McDonald was elected as Mayor of the City of Wixom at the November 2, 1993 election and served seven (7) consecutive terms as Mayor until losing this seat to Kevin W. Hinkley at the November 6, 2007 election. ♦ ♦ On May 19, 1958 an election was held in the City of Wixom wherein Joseph Stadnik was elected Mayor, receiving 302 of the 466 votes cast for this office. ♦ ♦ On May 19, 1958 Gunnar Mettala was elected to the Wixom City Council and served as a Wixom Councilmember through 1985. His last Council meeting serving in this capacity was the meeting of December 19, 1989. ♦ ♦ At an election held on November 7, 1972 a proposal to change the charter by extending the terms of office for the Mayor and Councilmembers from the Monday after the election to the second Monday in January following the regular City election passed. However, another proposal on that ballot to change the charter by extending the Mayor’s term of office from two years to four years failed. ♦ ♦ City general elections were changed from April to November in 1973 ♦ ♦ A revised City charter proposed by the Charter Revision Commission of the City of Wixom was passed by electors on November 3, 1987 and changed the City of Wixom from a strong Mayor form of government to a City Manager form of government ♦ ♦ While a City Manager Search Committee labored through the hiring process for Wixom’s first official City Manager, Assistant to the Mayor, Keith Salo, served as “Interim City Manager” from January 4, 1988 until this designation was withdrawn on September 27, 1988. Finance Director, Kevin Brady, served as Acting City Manager from September 27, 1988 until the first City Manager assumed office on October 25, 1988. ♦ ♦ The first City Manager hired by the City of Wixom was William P. Barlow III who was appointed on September 2, 1988 with a start date of October 24, 1988. Barlow took his Oath of Office at the regular Council meeting of October 25, 1988. ♦ ♦ At the regular Council meeting of January 17, 1991, J. He advocated a maximum of one animal and one tree per family because he believed that there were too many animals and plant life on earth. ♦ ♦ About US Presidents and Vice Presidents - ♦ ♦ George Washington was inaugurated for his first term, on 30 April 1789, at Federal Hall in New York City. His second inauguration took place in Philadelphia. ♦ ♦ Thomas Jefferson was the first to be inaugurated in Washington DC. Jefferson also was the only one to walk to and from his inauguration. ♦ ♦ William Henry Harrison had the shortest term of office as president. He served from for 32 days, from 4 March to 4 April 1841. ♦ ♦ Franklin D. Roosevelt had the longest term of office: 12 years. Roosevelt had three vice presidents serve during his four terms: John Nance Garner (1933-1941), Henry Wallace (1941-1945), Harry Truman (1945). ♦ ♦ 14 of the 45 vice presidents have become president: ♦ ♦ 5 vice presidents have been elected to the presidency: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, Richard Nixon, and George Bush. ♦ ♦ 4 vice presidents assumed the presidency after the president was assassinated: Andrew Johnson, Chester Authur, Theodore Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson. ♦ ♦ 4 vice presidents assumed the presidency after the president died of natural causes: John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Calvin Coolidge, and Harry Truman. ♦ ♦ Gerald Ford assumed the presidency following the resignation of Richard Nixon. ♦ ♦ Only Richard Nixon served two terms as Vice President and also was elected to two terms as President. ♦ ♦ The US Presidential candidate with the highest popular vote ever was Ronald Reagan. In 1984 he secured 54,455,075 votes. Reagan was also the candidate with the highest electoral vote: 525, in 1984. In that year he equalled the 49 states that Nixon carried in 1972. ♦ ♦ The candidate who ran the most times was Norman Thomas. He ran six times from 1928 and didn't win any. Thomas ran for presidency in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944 and 1948. ♦ ♦ Funds raised by the US Presidential candidates 2000: Ralph Nader - $5,989,559,Al Gore - $133,113,452,George W. Bush - $187,202,363 ♦ ♦ George Washington was the first president under the US constitution of 1789. However, the US was an independent nation for 13 years before the Constitution was signed. For one year during this time John Hanson served as "President of the US in Congress assembled." Technically, John Hanson was the first president of the United States. ♦ ♦ In 1750 there were about 800 million people in the world. In 1850 there were a billion more, and by 1950, another billion. Then it took just 50 years to double to 6 billion. ♦ ♦ There are more than 600 million telephone lines, yet almost half the world's population has never made a phone call on a land line. However, more than half the world's population has made a cell phone call.
